SAN DIEGO, California: Tiger Woods, hobbled by his recuperation from
knee surgery since the Masters, had a practice round on the Torrey
Pines South course Wednesday as he prepares for next week’s US
Open.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Woods
got his first look at how the familiar course will be set up for the
second major championship of 2008.
Woods, who had surgery on his left knee two days
after finishing second at The Masters, had not played a round since
Augusta.
He got in 17 holes, picking up his ball about
100 yards from the 18th green after seeing that a group of people
had begun to gather.
Report said Woods began his round at 8 a.m.
local time and played in 3 hours, 15 minutes under tight security.
While he was playing, no media or spectators
were allowed on the South Course, a public course that has been
closed during the run-up to the Open.
Woods won his sixth Buick Invitational title at
Torrey Pines in January and no player has been as successful at
Torrey Pines.
He said in late May that even though he had
decided to skip his usual Open tuneup of the Memorial, he was
“right on schedule” for the second major of 2008.
“The knee is doing better,” Woods said on
May 23 at the media day for the National tournament that he will
host at Congressional Country Club in July. “The rehab is
working.”
