MANNY PACQUIAO has his weight in check with barely three weeks
before formally invading the lightweight rank by challenging David
Diaz for the World Boxing Council (WBC) 135-pound title.
Unlike in the past when he struggled shedding
off extra poundage with a fight fast approaching, Pacquiao is hardly
worried nowadays of failing to meet the lightweight limit, stressing
he is only four pounds over halfway through his six-week training
camp at the Wildcard gym in California.
“Sa ngayon nasa 138-139 ako. So walang
problema talaga sa timbang,” said Pacquiao during a phone patch
interview provided by GMA-7 straight from his two-bedroom,
$4,000-monthly apartment at La Palazzo in California.
The mini-presscon was done at the 17th floor of
the GMA Building Friday morning, around Thursday evening in the U.
Trainer Freddie Roach plans to have the
29-year-old WBC super-featherweight champion spar for a total of
120-130 rounds before his June 28 showdown with Diaz at the Mandalay
Bay Resort and Casino Hotel.
Pacquiao is bidding to succeed where the great
Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Dindo Canoy, Bert Somodio, Andy Ganigan
and Randy Suico failed in the past—become the first Filipino to
win the 135-pound crown.
Should he do so, Pacquiao would also become the
first Asian to win four boxing titles in four different weight
categories.
