CUYAPO, Nueva Ecija: A town official who assumed
office only on Monday as Sanguniang Bayan secretary was gunned down
allegedly by a security aid of Mayor Amado Corpuz right in the town
hall compound on Wednesday.
Police identified the victim as
Angelito Espinosa, 40, while the suspect as Carlito Samonte,
reportedly a bodyguard of the mayor. The latter was arrested after
the killing and is now in police custody.
Espinosa was the second town
council secretary to have been killed in Nueva Ecija this year. The
first was in San Antonio town on January.
Prescilla Espinosa, the widow and
an employee of the rural health unit, said she was to return to her
office after taking merienda with the victim a little past 10 a.m.
when she heard the gunshots.
The victim reportedly managed to
run to the nearby police station with Samonte following, even
releasing another volley of fire right in front of a policeman.
Prescilla said that her husband
was instrumental in filing administrative and criminal charges
against Corpuz before the Ombudsman.
