DIGITAL LIFESTYLE: GADGETS OF THE WEEK

Wireless all the way

THERE’s no question about the importance of being connected. And in this world of true mobility, wireless Internet connection is an essential part of today’s digital lifestyle. Here are some of the latest digital devices that could easily help you explore the World Wide Web through the wireless realm.

Blue H1

What is it: An ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC) notebook.

Who’s it for: Budget-concious consumers who really need a mobile computing device.

Wallet magnet: Small and compact netbook; VIA Esther 1.0GHz CPU and 1GHz RAM; WiFi connection; Linux-based for the lowest-priced version; ready-to-use with built-in productivity software; affordable.

On second thought: Linpus Linux flavor may not be for everyone; at first, we had a hard time connecting via WiFi; average battery life.

What’s in the box: Blue H1 UMPC; power adapter; quick-start guide.

Tech Times’ verdict: If you’re really on a budget, then get one. But remember, there are better options within the same price range.

D-Link DWM-652 3.5G Express Card

What is it: A 3.5 Express Card data modem for broadband network connection.

Who’s it for: People looking for a global mobile broadband device for instant network access.

Wallet magnet: Works with 3G (UMTS), HSDPA, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM mobile connections; dual-antenna feature provides optimal data throughput & reliable connectivity; compatible with the latest Express Card technology in new laptops; will also work with USB via the included USB adapter; easy to use by simply inserting a mobile phone SIM card; no drivers needed for XP and Vista; maximum download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps (depending on network).

On second thought: PCMCIA (for older notebooks) is optional; you can configure your 3G mobile phone to do the same function; expensive device.

What’s in the box: D-Link DWM-652G Express Card data modem; USB adaptor; USB cable; notebook screen hook; manual and quick-start guide.

Tech Times’ verdict: Best for businessmen who travel a lot, particularly outside the country. A bit expensive though, especially when your

3G mobile phone can practically do the same thing for your laptop.

Smart Bro Prepaid Broadband Kit

What is it: A USB-based 3G/HSDPA modem that provides wireless network connection.

Who’s it for: People who need instant local Internet access anytime, anywhere.

Wallet magnet: Easy to acquire prepaid kit (no documents needed); Windows and Mac drivers already included in the USB device (no CD-drive needed); intuitive Smart Bro application with real-time usage counter; 3G/HSDPA or EDGE Internet connection speed; short USB cable; ZTE MF622 modem is a smart choice in terms of design and usability; Smart’s P10 for 30-minutes Net connection is not bad at all.

On second thought: Expect to shell-out a one-time payment of P4,500 for the 3G modem; erratic connecton speed; shortage of Smart Bro prepaid cards; Linux users need special software driver configuration from Smart.

What’s in the box: Smart Bro ZTE MF622 3G modem; short USB cable; long dual-plug USB cable; Smart prepaid data-only SIM card; quick-start guide and manual.

Tech Times’ verdict: A very convenient way to have instant broadband Internet connection. Best, it can match your Internet connection budget as well.
