Rocking against global
warming and for clean air

Band competition raises awareness on CO2 emissions

A Battle of the bands competition for Baga’t Hangin Musikahan program will challenge Filipino youths from all over the Metro Manila to integrate environmental messages in the lyrics of their composition, specifically, the theme is “Not Cool to be CO2l!” picking up from the United Nations Environment Program’s theme of “CO2: Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy” for World Environment Day.

The deadline of submission of CD entries for screening is on June 10. A concert will be held at the Activity Center, SM City North EDSA on June 29, 2 p.m. A total of P90,000 in cash prizes will be given to the winners of the competition.

Participating groups, need the endorsement of local government and/or the local Environment and Natural Resources Officer, must be composed of Filipinos or of Filipino descent, members between 15 to 35 years old and bona fide residents of the particular local government unit the group represents.

Amateurs and professional bands may join the competition, as long as they don’t have prior or existing recording contracts with any music company.

Criteria for judging shall be based on the overall performance (50 percent), creativity as to style and interpretation, relevance to theme and originality (35 percent) and audience impact and rapport (15 percent). Participants are discouraged from using “hardcore” music and the language to be used should adhere to the norms of “decency.”

It is organized by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Lung Center of the Philippines, Energy and Clean Air Project of the United States Agency for International Development, DIMITRI Productions and GMA Network, Inc.

For details, visit the Environmental Education and Information Division, Environmental Management Bureau—DENR, 2nd Floor, HRD Building, DENR Compound Visayas Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City, call/fax 928-4674 or 920-2251, or visit www.emb.gov.ph.
