Actor Rudy Fernandez will be laid to rest after lunch
today at The Heritage Park in Taguig City.
The family, through his
actress-wife Lorna Tolentino, thanked the fans who came in droves to
the wake but asked them to give the final day to them.
Fans had until yesterday
afternoon to view the actor’s remains. There was a Mass organized
by the Oasis of Love community Wednesday afternoon. And later in the
evening, many of his friends from the entertainment industry joined
the actor’s family for a final tribute to Fernandez.
Most came garbed in white, the
color picked for the wake by Fernandez before he died. Ricky Davao
and Lani Mercado hosted the solemn affair. Ogie Alcasid and Pops
Fernandez sang Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up,” a number that
set the mood for the entire night.
Fernandez’s best friends, actor
Philip Salvador and Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla, sang
“Doon Lang,” with a few of the lyrics rewritten by Senedy Que.
Another good friend, actor Tirso Cruz 3rd, offered a song he
composed, “Awit ni Daboy.” Fernandez was known by the nickname,
“Daboy.”
Jamie Rivera sang “In My
Life,” a Beatles original. The acclaimed vocal quintet The Company
performed “Seasons of Love,” the anthem from the Broadway
musical Rent. Regine Velasquez choked with emotions as she sang
“Somewhere,” the title of the movie produced by Fernandez’s
company, Reflection Films. Fernandez also starred in that movie with
his wife.
Their children, Ralphe, Renz and
Mark Anthony, led the tributes and eulogies. The actor’s sister,
Marie, also gave a brief talk.
“I am simply overwhelmed by the
outpouring of love and support for my dad,” said Renz, the
youngest son. “I cannot thank everyone enough.”
