THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said
Wednesday it accepts with much reservation the confirmation of
Cristina Enrile as the new Philippine ambassador to the Holy See.
The Commission on Appointments
confirmed the appointment of Enrile, the estranged wife of Senator
Juan Ponce Enrile, also on Wednesday. She will replace Ambassador
Leonida Vera.
“Both parties, the Vatican and
the Philippines, have their right to send who they think worthy or
qualified as representatives,” said Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo
Medroso, chairman of the CBCP Episcopal on Canon Law, over Radyo
Veritas, a Church-run radio station.
The bishop added that the
morality issue was among the primary reasons why members of the
Catholic clergy were against Mrs. Enrile’s appointment to the
Vatican.
“It’s now between the Vatican
and Philippines. We’re out of it already, but for us, we only ask
what should be the proper thing,” Medroso said.
Many Catholic bishops were
surprised when the Palace announced the recall of Vera and the
subsequent appointment of Mrs. Enrile.
“We are really disappointed,
because we were never consulted, for the CBCP could give an opinion.
Now if our opinion would be received or not, that’s the
President’s prerogative,” Medroso said.
