HI! SOCIETY
By Becky Garcia
Marc by Marc Jacobs and the
Banana Republic are here

If Stores Specialists, Inc.‘s tandem of Nedy Tentoco and Anton Huang decide to close shop and retire to the Caribbean or the Mediterranean or even to their chosen idea of paradise, the Greenbelt and Glorietta malls would be 75 percent vacant. All the wonderful and truly high-end boutiques are all their “babies.” Just name any designer clothes line (male or female) and you can be sure it’s Nedy and Anton behind them.

Recently at Greenbelt 5 Marc Jacobs, one of fashion’s coolest and most influential designers was introduced in the first Marc by Marc Jacobs’ boutique in the country. The store has available ready-to-wear line and other stylish accessories including handbags, accent jewelry, shoes that are any woman’s dream to own.

Anton, Executive Vice President of Stores Specialists, Inc., together with Luc Moron, Marc Jacobs EVP Asia Pacific, Victoria Garcia, Marc Jacobs Director for Business Planning, and Emma Mace, Marc Jacobs Director of Asia, proudly showed-off the brand-new store and to view the new Marc Jacobs Spring ’08 collection with a fashion show.

We ran into a plethora of fashionistas and fashionable socialites like Tessa Prieto-Valdez, Fely Atienza, Barbara Aboitiz, Jeena Lopez, Katrina Goulbourn, and Teresa Herrera.

A few weeks later, also in Greenbelt 5, the mother-and-son team hosted the grand debut of the iconic brand—Banana Republic. It is also its first store in the Philippines. As you know Banana Republic was the brand that made safari fashion under chic and classic. With the indefatigable Anton Huang, Rosemary Young, Banana Republic Marketing Director, Teague O’Malley, Banana Republic Visual Manager, and Richard Li, regional Director (Franchise Sales) Asia hosted the evening’s grand launch. What a fabulous collection! We noted city sophisticated wardrobe of fluid maxi skirts with oversize blooms, dramatic 3/4 length coats, and knits in electric hues. Also for more laidback getup, classic leisure looks of nautical stripes, cropped anoraks, tennis-inspired Monogram V-necks and varsity sweaters that are translated into clean modern cuts. For men, staple jeans and slacks in basic hues of black, khaki, and navy matched with crinkled polo, Henley shirts, and tailored jackets definitely make the men’s Banana Republic a fashion must-have for every guy.

We chanced into the very vibrant US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney and the British Ambassador Peter Beckingham with attractive wife Jill, the Zobel brothers Jaime Augusto and Fernando with their gorgeous wives Lizzie and Kit; also there were stylesetters Tweety de Leon-Gonzales, Christine Jacobs-Sandejas, Ciara Marasigan-Serumgard, Miriam Quiambao, Divine Lee, Paul Soriano and Rovilson Fernandez in their fave Banana Republic ensembles.

With all these fashionable boutiques opening in Makati there are no excuses left not to be stylish, chic and thoroughly made-over. Congratulations to Nedy and Anton! This is a country where it seems rise in gasoline prices have no effect on Manila’s finest stylesetters.

Until next week… Stay well and well-dressed!
