BAGUIO CITY: Baguio marked another history for hosting the unfurling
of the Philippines’ biggest flag during the 110th Independence Day
celebration on June 12 at the Athletic Bowl.
People who attended what many considered a
historic event wowed and stood just as hundreds help each other in
unfurling the giant flag, which measured 100 meter by 200 meters.
The Athletic Bowl was not even enough to accommodate the flag.
The huge red, white, blue, and
yellow-colored flag is believed to be the second biggest flag in the
world after the Israeli flag measuring to about 660 meters by 100
meters, which was unfurled in Gaza last year.
But while the country failed to mark a
record in the Guinness Book of World Records, city residents still
beam with pride that the maker of the giant Philippine and Israel
flags is a Filipina in the person of evangelical Christian Grace
Galindez-Gupana.
The giant flag weighing 3.8 tons was
shipped through a big truck days before the event courtesy of the
event organizer Good News Community Church.
It is the second time that a giant
Philippine flag was unfurled in a span of two years after the
unveiling of a huge flag in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya on September 17,
2006.
Strong winds damaged the giant Philippine
flag while government officials and around 15,000 residents and
visitors were witnessing the unveiling of what supposed to be a
historic moment. The damaged giant flag measured 100 meters by 200
meters.
Good weather cooperated during the
unveiling of the giant flag on Thursday but parts of the flag got
wet after it rained in Baguio Wednesday night.
