STATE-RUN National Transmission Corp. seeks loan
assistance amounting to billions of pesos from Calyon Funding
Facility to finance the power transmission projects in the Visayas
and Mindanao, data from the National Economic and Development
Authority showed.
Documents obtained from NEDA revealed
TransCo’s plan to source funding from Calyon for the Northern
Panay Backbone Transmission project costing P1.91 billion and the
Maramag-Bunawan 230 kV Power Transmission project, P3.5 billion.
TransCo, the projects’ implementing agency,
said the Northern Panay power transmission project will address the
load voltage problems in the province as it is designed to prevent
overloading and accommodate generation capacity additions, and
promises to improve the quality of power transmission in Aklan and
the northern part of Antique through an upgraded line and additional
substation capacity.
The project will also provide a new
distribution point for the Panay sub-grid and prepare affected
electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in the area for the
wholesale electricity spot market.
TransCo said it will use internally generated
cash in case the project is not enrolled for Calyon financing.
The Maramag-Bunawan power transmission project,
on the other hand, aims for uninterrupted flow of power generated by
the Agus Complex from Abaga, Mindanao Coal from Tagoloan/Kirahon and
by Pulangui IV from Maramag to Kibawe and New Loon/Davao/Bunawan to
ensure continuous supply of adequate power to the southern part of
Mindanao gets
It will also serve as the only and major
backbone line connecting Tagoloan/Kirahon to New Loon/Davao/Bunawan
once the Kibawe-New Loon/Davao and Pulangui IV-Kibawe 138 kV
transmission lines are de-energized/decommissioned upon reaching
their economic lives in 2009 and 2013, respectively.
