The secretary of Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim on Friday said that the
failed ambush against him is one of the hazards of his job, which is
keeping the City Hall free from unscrupulous individuals.
Lawyer Rafaelito Garayblas, whose son, driver
and clerk were hurt during the incident that happened in Quezon City
about 7 p.m. on Thursday, has been serving as secretary to the mayor
since Lim assumed office last July. He said that upon Lim’s
orders, he embarked on an all-out “cleanup” campaign to rid the
city of grafters and corrupt practices.
“It is probably in the course of this duty
that I unwittingly drew the ire of some quarters,” he said.
Reports have it that Garayblas was on board his
red Subaru Forrester when unknown men riding motorcycles fired at
them at the corner of Araneta Avenue and Quezon Avenue in Quezon
City the other day.
The lawyer’s security personnel riding
separate vehicles saw the encounter, and tried to fight back.
Unfortunately, a certain Christopher Abasula was slain in the
assault.
Aside from the minor wounds caused by the attack
to his son, four others were hit by stray bullets during the course
of the crossfire.
Lim condemned the attack on Garayblas, and
assured that “this cowardly act against an innocent person and a
public official will not go unpunished.”
