A city mayor now leads the Union of Local Authorities of the
Philippines (ULAP), the umbrella organization of all local
government units and national private associations across the
country.
League of Cities president and Mandaluyong City
Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr. was overwhelmingly chosen to head the
union in an election held Monday at the Century Park Hotel in
Manila.
Since its creation in 1998, the union has been
headed by a governor, with former Laguna Gov. Joey Lina being its
first president.
There are 11 regular members in the union, which
include the League of Provinces, League of Cities, League of
Municipalities, Vice Governors’ League, Vice Mayors’ League,
Philippine Councilors’ League, Provincial Board Members’ League,
Liga ng Barangay, National Movement of Young Legislators, Lady
Legislators’ League and the Pambansang Pederasyon ng Sangguniang
Kabataan.
In a historical move, however, leaders of these
leagues elected Abalos to lead the 45,000-strong organization.
“The barometer of success is not in the
winning but how we will perform the job as one group so I encourage
everybody to work hard and commit themselves to pursue the
advocacies of ULAP,” Mayor Abalos stressed.
