SGV’s SyCip leads Tsinoy professional, business, civic leaders
given Jose Rizal Awards for Excellence.
World-known management and corporate-governance
expert Washington Z. SyCip led the 14 outstanding Chinese-Filipinos
and one civic corporation that received on Saturday the Sixth Jose
Rizal Awards for Excellence (JRAE) from The Manila Times and Kaisa
Para sa Kaunlaran Inc.
With Chief Justice Reynato Puno as the keynote
speaker, the award ceremonies were held in the auditorium of the
Awat Keng Auditorium in the Kaisa-Angelo King Heritage Center on
Anda and Cabildo streets in Intramuros, Manila.
SyCip, founder of SyCip Gorres & Velayo Inc.
and one of the original brains behind the Asian Institute of
Management, received the JRAE’s Lifetime Achievement Award for
Public Service.
Architect Robert Carag Ong received the
Professional Services Award for Architecture.
McDonald’s George T. Yang got the Special
Award for Business & Entrepreneurship.
Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap was given a
special citation for government service.
The nationwide Association of Philippine
Volunteer Fire Brigades, Incorporated, whose membership is mainly
made up of Tsinoys, received JRAE’s Special Award for Public
Service.
The Arts & Culture excellence award went to
the painter Charlie S. Co.
The Business & Entrepreneurship award was
given to Standard Appliances Corporation founder Siy Yap (Yap Chua
Siy).
Community Service awards went to Co Tec Tai and
John Kua Tan.
Ateneo de Davao University’s Dr. Macario D.
Tiu got the Education award.
Francis Jao Kong received the Journalism award.
Dr. Kenneth Hartigan Go and Dr. Isidro C. Sia
both got the Medicine Award.
The Sports award went to 14-year-old Chess
Grandmaster Wesley B. So.
Every awardee honored is not only a model of
excellence in his field. He has also contributed in a remarkable way
to the country’s growth and development.
The Jose Rizal Awards for Excellence project
honors outstanding Chinese-Filipinos, or Tsinoys, as paragons of
excellence, patriotism and concern for the community like the most
famous and respected Filipino of Chinese descent, Dr. Jose Rizal.
The Manila Times, the oldest national daily
newspaper in the country, and Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran Inc., a
leading Tsinoy foundation, have been partners since the project’s
inception in 2002.
