Ultimately, buying art is based on how the artwork makes you feel. Quite simply, if you like it and you can afford it, then buy it. But before you take out your wallet and take that piece home, here are a few questions to ask:
1. What measures did the artist take to ensure the artwork's longevity? If you're paying big bucks, make your investment can be inherited by your children.
2. How and where should I mount a painting in your house? As a general rule, never hang a painting in direct sunlight which will cause the paint to fade. Light damage cannot be reversed.
3. Is the artist or the gallery willing to accept installment payments?
4. Can you borrow the artwork and bring it home? If you are not sure about how you feel about a certain piece of art, why not try it out first? Some artists and galleries allow their collectors to borrow artwork so they can see whether the artwork "suits'' them.
5. Does the painting/artwork have a certificate of authentication from the artist or the gallery?
