Salon revelation

Mane pampering for men

By Rome Jorge, Lifestyle Editor

A strange halo-like ring oscillates around the head, emanating energy. Layers of silver tinfoil wrap around one’s head. Creamy red slime turns human protein into orange and gold upon contact. Razor-sharp cold steel implements cut away at the body’s extrusions. Blasts of hot wind alternate with douses of water. Strange hands constantly probe one’s head. It’s an alien world inside a salon. And for a no-nonsense kind of guy, to be pampered in one can be a welcome abduction.

For the average salt-of-the-earth kind of guy, the attractions of the beauty salon have always been a mystery. We’ve always wondered why our girlfriends, wives or metrosexual friends pay a fortune to be at the mercy of strangers armed shears and chemicals for hours at a time. Of course, they look fabulous afterwards. But is it just vanity, or is there something more that keeps people coming back to salons? The Manila Times Lifestyle investigates, seriously.

For longhaired dudes who rarely allow scissors near their mane and for clean-cut guys accustomed to getting haircuts cheap from a neighborhood barber, choosing the right salon with which to entrust one’s hair can be daunting. You might as well get the best because, man, you do not want to be stuck with a stupid haircut.

Louis Kee of Razzle Dazzle Salon boasts a resume that is confidence inspiring. Having studied styling Rever in Hong Kong, he furthered his training in Mayfair in London with the Vidal Sassoon Academy and honed his skills at Toni & Guy Academy in 1982 at Christophers Place. He now runs two salons in Hong Kong as well. He is also a member of the Pantene Council of Stylists.

It turns out that experiencing a salon can very relaxing with shoulder rubs, soothing shampoos, modern amenities, pleasant staff and good conversation. Kee asks his patrons what they want, but is daring enough to propose what he thinks is best for the customer.

His staff implemented a full color hair treatment and highlights costing P1,800 and P1,900 respectively and while Kee personally executed the haircut that cost P800. The entire process took a few hours. Experiencing the salon made me understand my female friends more. Pampering truly is therapeutic.

One’s relations with women change even more after one’s haircut. People see you in a new light. Change one’s style communicates dynamism and daring.

“As a salon professional hairstylist, you have an obligation to educate and inform your client on this subject,” says Louis Kee. Razzle Dazzle Salon is at Frabella Condominium, 109 Rada Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City.
