PEOPLE
By Bob Garon
Cold-blooded killers

I just have to write something about the cold-blooded killing of 10 people in that bank robbery in Cabuyao recently.

What bothered me was not the bank heist. That happens all the time. There will always be those who need to have easy money and decide to take it come what may. What is most troubling is that there are among us, men who can kill not one but ten humans at one time, execution style. No doubt, they wanted to rid themselves of all witnesses and they did so without hesitation.

These killers are what psychologists call sociopaths. The sociopath has no conscience. He is scary because he is capable of doing the most reprehensible act and not feeling any remorse about it. He can rip the legs off a little kitten and not be bothered by it. He can step all over the rights of others and never feel even the slightest bit of remorse. And, yes, he is capable of killing in cold blood innocent people he does not even know and who have done him no wrong. Perhaps, like those in the bank, they were unfortunately in the way of getting what he wants and he kills them in cold blood.

Clearly, the killers were sociopaths. Otherwise, they could not have done what they did. They would not have the insensitivity, the hard-heartedness to kill innocents in such a massacre.

Sociopaths are not born that way. They are made over the years. They usually begin early in life by breaking rules and violating the rights of others and getting away with it. They fail to be disciplined by their parents and caregivers. They grow up getting into trouble in school and with their peers. They have a sense of entitlement and feel the world owes them. They are very effective liars and, when they do lie, it doesn’t bother them one bit. Though they know the difference between right and wrong, they choose to bury their conscience and totally disregard it. As they get older, their misbehaviors become more serious and soon they get involved in petty crimes. Later, their criminal behavior can end up in mass murder like what happened in the Cabuyao bank robbery.

It is a fact that a very high percentage of men and women in prisons are sociopaths. It is also clear to me that the rehabilitation of sociopaths is very difficult.

When the cops catch these mass murderers, they should be executed. Even if the death penalty is not applicable anymore, an exception should be made for these killers. They don’t deserve to live among us … even in our prisons.
