Two Fridays ago, I caught the visiting Swedish ska band, Skaramouche
perform at Chakik’s in Ortigas with Coffee Break Island and The
Spaceflower Show. And here’s the icing on this ska cake—free
entrance. When there’s ska, you can expect a bouncing room and
lots and lots of sweat going on. I kept asking for cold water at the
bar. After the show, I bought the band’s CD. They sing in English
and Spanish too. I had it signed by singer Delphine, saxophonist
Matt and my personal favorite, keyboardist Dominic. I would have
loved to catch them again but they left shortly after to play a
string of out of town shows. They’ll be back this Saturday (when
I’m out of town) to perform at the Fete de la Music at the Mall of
Asia and then at Handlebar on Polaris Street in Makati. Say hi to
Dominic for me if you see him.
Last week-end, toy geeks and their ilk all
headed over to the 8th annual ToyCon. It went on from Saturday to
Sunday and occupied areas 2 and 3 of the SM Megatrade Hall in SM
Megamall. I went over there on the second day, with my crew from
Black Pearl Philippines and had an absolute blast. I’m one of
those people who love Halloween more than Christmas, and over the
last few years it’s been great to have little pockets of Halloween
spread throughout the year thanks to the growing popularity of
cosplaying (short for costume role playing). Now several events that
highlight cosplaying happen throughout the year! While I’m more
into cosplaying characters from my favorite films—especially those
with Johnny Depp—I definitely get a kick out of seeing the animé
cosplayers with their candy-colored hair and cartoon-colored get
ups, even if I can’t identify them.
The pirates were supposed to hang out at the
ToyCon for a few hours but we ended up staying from 3 p.m. up until
it closed shop at 9 p.m. I did not have a chance to go around to
each and every booth and see what they had to offer but I it was
inevitable that the crew drag me over to the Jack Sparrow Marquette
at the MaxiCollectors booth. It was gorgeous—lovely details, real
fabric for the clothes and apparently real human hair even on the
eyebrows and moustache and beard. I did notice the word “sold”
written not just once but twice on the statue. I heard, for a lovely
price of P80,000. I just didn’t have enough doubloons in my
treasure chest that day, nor enough room in my gypsy pirate skirt to
make off with it.
Not content with just invading the Toy Con, our
pirate group headed over to Fandom Café in Cubao to raid the Sunday
webcast of Fandom Live. You can check it out here http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/488450.
Last but not least, fans of Ed Norton and Tim
Roth will enjoy The Incredible Hulk—I liked it more when the
actors were out rather than their alter egos: The Hulk and The
Abomination.
