PRESIDENT GLORIA ARROYO leaves Saturday evening for a 10-day visit
to the US to further strengthen historic US-Philippines relations.
The President will be accompanied by her
husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo and have her first stop in San
Francisco, California, which hosts a large Filipino community.
Also with the presidential party are some
Cabinet officials, lawmakers and top Filipino business leaders.
Mrs. Arroyo’s US engagements also include
meetings with Filipino communities, Filipino World War II veterans
and American business groups.
Highlighting the President’s US trip will be
her meeting with President George Bush, which is expected to focus
on antiterrorism, food security, nonproliferation of nuclear arms
and human rights.
The President will also meet with officials of
the Washington-based Millennium Challenge Corp., a US government
firm established to work with developing nations in promoting good
governance.
In March this year, the corporation said the
Philippines is eligible to apply for a “compact assistance” to
curb corruption.
