LETTER

Caring about the EU

I wish to thank Rene Q. Bas for writing about the resounding victory of the NO vote against the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland’s referendum in his most recent article, “Do you care about what happens to the EU?”

I do care about Catholic Ireland as I have a colleague there who heads the Irish Society for Christian Civilization which helped initiate an information drive to defeat the pernicious Lisbon Treaty.

The referendum only underscores the importance of consulting first the sovereign will of a nation’s citizens before approving a questionable treaty that would have a telling and lasting consequence on their lives. This was only done in Ireland as the other EU member countries which have so far approved the treaty put the crucial decision in the hands of their dubious lawmakers.

May we learn from the vigilance of the Irish people for we may one day find ourselves in a similar situation as we have our own version of lawmakers who introduce questionable bills in Congress (e.g. divorce, reproductive health and population management and antidiscrimination laws that favor homosexuals, etc.)
