As the month of June rolls out, Irene Diaz’s calendar for the year
would have more than the typical student’s activities. As a
political science undergraduate, and a mother of four kids, she has
actively searched for ways in which to learn more about the
environment beyond the boundaries of a classroom walls. She has
already participated in a disaster committee organized by Department
of Social Welfare and Development in Region 4 and recently as a
member of Haribon Foundation, she joined the Million Hectare Walk
held last year to raise funds to save the remaining rainforests in
our country.
Diaz believes in the saying that one should walk
the talk when it comes to environmental conservation. She said,
“Although I do not have one particular environmental advocacy
I’m into now, I think that doing first what you want everybody
else to do to protect the environment is important.”
“Being a member of Haribon gives me a chance
to do and fight for what I believe is the rightful thing to do for
our Mother Earth— to respect her. Also, the Foundation gives me
opportunities to share my ideas and suggestions regarding how others
can help save the environment.”
Diaz’s is a big nature fan and even her
recreational activities involve helping the environment. “I love
to plant, go nature tripping, draw and take pictures. For me, these
activities are not grand but they serve as tangible proofs that our
country is a truly a beautiful place that should be protected for
future generations.”
“Working hand-in-hand to care for the
environment should come naturally to every Filipino. Not only those
who can, not only those who want to, but all of us.”
