PEOPLE
By Bob Garon
Your work as a sacred trust

A man of honor sees his work as a sacred trust. He will give himself wholeheartedly to his responsibility. I said, “responsibility” because the man of honor sees his work more as a vocation rather than a job.

You give your all to your vocation. Time cards do not matter. If it means more hours, then you will gladly give them with dedication and determination. You will do so because your work is a reflection of you and you will never allow your name, your honor to be tainted by sloppiness.

If you are an honorable man, you understand very well that your work has your fingerprints all over it. It identifies you and is a mirror of you. Therefore, you cannot allow it to reflect badly on you.

Honorable people care about their reputation. They care so much that they are willing to walk the extra mile to preserve it.

The man who gives you a money back guarantee and honors it when the need arises, is an honorable man. The man of honor is an honest man. Dishonesty is an unbearable contradiction to the man of honor. It is something that he cannot live with. It is an unshakeable value that he has internalized and is unwilling to compromise.

His word is better than a signed contract. He is as good as his word. Though uneducated, my father was a man of honor. I witnessed him returning to the city to give back 13 cents to a store. It was change that was not his. He did not consider it too small an amount to disregard. His sense of honor would not allow it. Though he drank too much, nobody questioned his honor.

Here, I do not consider the “honor” that certain criminals and arrogant persons talk about. Those dishonest men who get insulted quickly and easily when confronted with their misbehaviors. They swiftly invoke the stains put on their honor and are quick to retaliate. This is false honor.

Honor without honesty is a sham, a scam and something detestable. It is pure hypocrisy!

The man of honor is defined by his honesty. This is why he does the right thing even when nobody is watching. He cannot live with himself if he does not walk his talk.

Our country desperately needs more men and women of honor. Persons for whom honor is a top priority. Persons who are defined by it.
