MORE than 850 passengers and crew of the M/V Princess of the Stars were declared missing on Saturday off the waters of Sibuyan Island at the height of the powerful typhoon Frank. As surely as accusing fingers will fly over the tragedy, Filipinos and the world can expect that the Princess mishap would be forgotten in time by the authorities, the victims and their families are not likely to get justice, leaving the public to write the tragedy off as a lost cause.

This national shame has happened many times before. A big ship sinks during a storm or in pacific weather, hundreds of passengers and crew lose their lives, an investigation starts, the hearing takes an inordinate time, the decision pends, no official report is made and amnesia develops over the case. The shipping line casts off again for more profitable business.
