THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) plans to issue a
circular mandating building developers to allow two or more
telecommunication companies to serve their tenants in a bid to
promote competition.
NTC Director Edgardo Cabarios said the agency is
studying whether such a mandate is possible under the National
Building Code.
He said the draft circular will provide that
Internet and telephone access for building tenants be on a
nondiscriminatory basis to prevent exclusive telco deals with
developers and ensure fair competition.
“Consumers should have a choice to be able to
enjoy quality Internet and telephone services,” Cabarios said.
Relatedly, he said the boom in real estate
industry will further boost the demand for telephone and Internet
broadband services in the country.
Data from the National Statistics Office showed
a 10.7-percent growth in building permits approved in the third
quarter of last year at 21,513 compared with 19,431 recorded during
the same quarter of the previous year.
