After a dismal start in team event, nine Filipino shuttlers begin
their quest in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events of the 14th
Asean Schools Badminton Championships on Thursday at the Ninoy
Aquino Stadium.
Palarong Pambansa standouts Gelita Ramos and
Camille Yang will face fancied opponents in their respective first
round assignments in girls’ singles.
Ramos takes on Nichaon Jindapol of Thailand
while Yang battles Thitirat Triyachart of Singapore in the
tournament supported by STI, Yonex, Enchanted Kingdom, Centrum,
Superferry, AirPhilippines, Gold’s Gym, Gatorade, Rebisco, Dominos
Pizza, Absolute and Splash.
Joper Escueta is looking to notch his first win
against the unheralded Ak Noriskandar Bin Pg Omar of Brunei
Darussalam in boys’ singles.
Filipino duo Greg Paz and Gelli Ramos test the
mettle of Md Rahimin Bin Mohd Azri and Sazulinah Bte Hj Mohd Saat of
Brunei in mixed doubles while Gerold Valle and Lance Bautista battle
the veteran pair of Angga Pratama and Kevin Alexander Tjoe of
Indonesia in the boys’ doubles.
In girls’ doubles, Dia Nicole Magno and
Rochelle Andres will meet Indonesians Anneke Feinya Agustine and
Aurien Hudiono.
Meanwhile, defending champion Indonesia and
Thailand arranged their championship showdown in team event after
posting contrasting victories on Wednesday.
Indonesia swept Singapore, 5-0, while Thailand
needed to dig deeper to upset the second-seeded Malaysia.
