Filipinos face fancied foes
in Asean schools badminton

After a dismal start in team event, nine Filipino shuttlers begin their quest in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events of the 14th Asean Schools Badminton Championships on Thursday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Palarong Pambansa standouts Gelita Ramos and Camille Yang will face fancied opponents in their respective first round assignments in girls’ singles.

Ramos takes on Nichaon Jindapol of Thailand while Yang battles Thitirat Triyachart of Singapore in the tournament supported by STI, Yonex, Enchanted Kingdom, Centrum, Superferry, AirPhilippines, Gold’s Gym, Gatorade, Rebisco, Dominos Pizza, Absolute and Splash.

Joper Escueta is looking to notch his first win against the unheralded Ak Noriskandar Bin Pg Omar of Brunei Darussalam in boys’ singles.

Filipino duo Greg Paz and Gelli Ramos test the mettle of Md Rahimin Bin Mohd Azri and Sazulinah Bte Hj Mohd Saat of Brunei in mixed doubles while Gerold Valle and Lance Bautista battle the veteran pair of Angga Pratama and Kevin Alexander Tjoe of Indonesia in the boys’ doubles.

In girls’ doubles, Dia Nicole Magno and Rochelle Andres will meet Indonesians Anneke Feinya Agustine and Aurien Hudiono.

Meanwhile, defending champion Indonesia and Thailand arranged their championship showdown in team event after posting contrasting victories on Wednesday.

Indonesia swept Singapore, 5-0, while Thailand needed to dig deeper to upset the second-seeded Malaysia.
