UP makes short work of foes

REIGNING National Open and University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion University of the Philippines swept its first two games in abbreviated fashion to share early lead in the National Capital Region women’s softball elimination of the Philippine Olympic Festival Thursday at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) ground.

The Lady Maroons needed only 3 innings in shutting out host PUP, 15-0, thanks to the 1-hit job of Alex Zuluaga. They proceeded to deal Pasig the same overwhelming beating, 20-0, in just four frames with Girlie Ongpin manning the mound.

The twin victories put the Lady Maroons on equal footing with Team Manila, idle University of the East and Rizal Technological University at 2-0.

The Asia Pacific championship-bound Manileñas posted an 8-1 win over La Salle to follow up their 38-0 massacre of Pasig City during Wednesday’s opener of the 21-under tournament managed by the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines and organized by the Philippine Olympic Committee.
