THE Commission on Higher Education recently warned review centers
that they will no longer extend the deadline for the imposition of
Executive Order No. 566, which mandates independent review centers
to integrate with schools to prevent a repeat of the 2006 Nursing
Board exam scandal.
Commission Deputy Executive Director Julito
Vitriolo aired the warning after receiving a position paper from a
parent’s group which expressed apprehensions over the apparent
lack of accredited and integrated school-based review centers that
have permits.
“We would like to issue this warning that the
time is up for the second deadline which is on May 2008. We will no
longer extend the deadline. Failure to get the proper accreditations
will mean the closure of independent review centers,” he said.
It will be recalled that in 2006, part of the
nursing exams was tainted by leakage, which caught the attention of
foreign governments, specifically the United States, Great Britain
and Australia.
The countries even warned that they will stop
employing Filipino professionals as a consequence of the scam,
fearing that they might not be hiring competent professionals.
Vitriolo said that their main concern is simply
guiding students and parents in enrolling in legitimate and
commission-authorized review centers.
“We want to make sure that these review
centers are up to the standards and avoid embarrassing events like
the purported leakage. This way the review centers are legal and is
accredited,” he said.
