BUREAU of Animal Industry Director Dave Catbagan said the
country’s export of chicken to Japan is expected to reach eight
million kilos for 2008.
Catbagan said export of deboned chicken parts by
San Miguel Corp. in 2007 reached 6,000 metric tons, which means the
country has the capacity to export a large volume of poultry
products. The company started exporting poultry products to Japan in
2004.
He added that at present, there is a 20-percent
increase in the supply of chicken in the country.
However, the Philippines still cannot export
chicken to other countries because of the stiff competition in
prices.
Catbagan explained that in 2007, Abu Dhabi tried
to tap the Philippines for the supply of chicken at two container
vans per week. But this did not push through because of the high
prices of chicken in the country.
The Philippines is one of only three Avian
Influenza-free countries in Southeast Asia. The two others are
Brunei and Singapore.
