THE Philippine Sports Commission
(PSC) has suspended its financial assistance to the Philippine
Cycling Federation (PhilCycling) pending the result of the
investigation on the controversy hounding the association.
PSC Chairman William Ramirez also
welcomed the investigation of the Ombudsman after a group of
protesting athletes submitted their complaints Friday morning at the
Office of the Ombudsman.
“We’re suspending any
financial assistance to the PhilCycling until the problem in the
association is solved,” said Ramirez during a media briefing
Friday. “But the athletes will continue to get their monthly
allowances.”
Affected by the PSC decision was
the participation of national riders in the Tour de Jakarta on March
23.
Some members of the national team
sent a letter to the PSC regarding overpriced bicycles and other
equipment amounting to P2.2 million.
Meanwhile, the PSC received P11.1
million as its share from the Bureau of Customs. The amount will be
used for training and international exposure of the athletes
especially those preparing for the Beijing Olympic Games.
PSC commissioner Ambrocio de Luna
said they are now working on the 1990 to 1996 remittances to be
released in April.
