YOUTHOPIA
By Marylaine Louise Viernes
A doggone nation with poly-ticks

Truth: We have been infested by bloodsuckers for ages. Even worse is that we breed them. It makes me think whether we really merit our top spot in the animal kingdom, when some animals are evidently more civilized than us. Animals that demonstrate mutualism, where both benefit from the relationship, are the Nile crocodile and the Egyptian plover, which gets its nutrition from cleaning the crocodile’s teeth. Funny, how some of our officials with PhDs might have overlooked this valuable lesson in Biology, and just choose to settle for being a crocodile.

Shameless, how some people just constantly ransack the money our citizens work so hard for. Worse is that these people have been trusted and given full authority by our citizens to govern us. They’re no better than a bunch of holduppers with a streamlined scheme for bank robbery. In this game they, too, are the police. With this situation, it’s no wonder why our nation is going to the dogs.

Meanwhile, a lot of our people turn lenient and have the chutzpah to assert that corruption will always be part of any society. Saying such is silmilar to accepting helplessness over the matters which affect us. Yes, granted that corruption is present in all forms of government, isn’t it valid to argue that graft can be contained so as our economic situation won’t be as bad as it is?

I will not pretend to be an economist, but I think that even a 7-year old can observe the plight affecting the nation’s population, especially the youth. They are brought into this world without the choice of a decent family, situation or opportunities. Rich people with myopic eyes, who have never been shirtless in their lives, say that poverty is simply the upshot of indolence or ignorance, but I’ve come to learn that a person can never strive for something he does not have an idea of. For instance, haughty Pontius Pilates say that squatters are squatters because of their own making; partly true as these squatters easily come to terms with their fate, but, it may also be because they were never exposed to anything, nor do they know that a better life exists out there.

To answer our many problems, a two-fold endeavor must be done, coming from both the rich and prominent, and the poor and powerless. Each can do something right now, maybe not for themselves, but at least for the generations to come. They must center themselves on the proper values. For the well-heeled clans of politicians, entrepreneurs, and all things divine, they must keep their children committed to something other than their family’s wealth and status. They must make them understand that with their immense blessings come even greater responsibilities. Short-term and ostentatious means of service are fine, but all these things do are give the poor fish, but not teach them to fish for themselves. The next generation primed to lead must inherit all they can, minus the desire to fatten themselves with the pork.

On the other hand, being underprivileged is not a pretext to point fingers at the government for each one of us has a role. We must not just leave our mouth hanging open for something to fill our stomach, and when nothing comes, shout in protest at our leaders’ iniquities. We must not let our eyes get blinded by a small glimpse of profit for only integrity can provide us the bigger picture. Some people just let the times get the best of them; so instead of at least trying to give the younger generation a chance- through proper education they just take the blows as the government takes the blame.

It’s either you’re a dog or a tick. Too bad if you’re the dog, but it’s just a matter of knowing that you can eradicate these bloodsuckers. Let us stop barking at the wrong tree and bark at ourselves for a change. Unless we do so, we will continue to see our children perish in a dog eat dog nation; big catastrophes caused by infinitesimal things we overlook.
