Compassion

By Amiel Martin Cabanlig

Popoli celebrates March as  “Women’s Month” by lauding the nurturing, mothering and passionate, qualities that are so endemic to the fairest sex.

And as pop culture so often revolves around the lives and examples of Hollywood’s most notable stars, let us applaud the noble efforts of two such sought after celebs who have not only become icons on the silver screen but real-life role models and generous and compassionate women, perfect for this month’s empowering theme.

A hopeful Scarlett Johansson is
a beautiful role model for women.

Scarlett Johansson sells herself for charity

Sexy Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson is auctioning herself off on eBay. The star is offering the highest bidder a chance to spend the evening with her at the premiere of one of her movies.

Also included in the eBay package is two tickets to the premier of her upcoming summer flick “He’s Just Not That Into You” which also stars Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Ben Affleck.

The winner will receive a chauffeured car service to the premiere and their hair and makeup done by Prive.

There will be two tickets to the world premiere of the movie in July in either Los Angeles or New York - and some one on one time with Johansson herself.

A video also plays on the eBay listing featuring Johansson who says: “Hi, I am Scarlett Johansson and I’m auctioning off two tickets to be my guest at the world premiere of my film He’s Just Not That In To You.

“This auction benefits Oxfam, which is an international relief organization that fights poverty around the world.

“The winner of the charity auction will not only get to attend the premiere but 100 per cent of the proceeds go directly to supporting Oxfam’s work so please, please, please bid high.

“Thank you for listening and thanks for your support and happy bidding.”

Proceeds will benefit Oxfam America, an international development and relief agency that delivers development programs and emergency relief services, and also campaigns for change in global practices and policies that keep people in poverty.

The eBay listing states: “Scarlett Johansson is a passionate and committed advocate and fundraiser and has been involved with Oxfam since 2005.

“The bidding is listed to end on March 12 2008 - and so far there have been a total of eight bids with the highest bid being $205.”

Drew Barrymore is a $1M woman role-model

Drew Barrymore announced Monday she is donating $1 million to help fight hunger. The 33-year-old “Charlie’s Angels” star who serves as a World Food Program ambassador will give the money to the World Food Program, a U.N. body that delivers millions of tons of food aid to more than 70 million people in about 80 countries.

According to statistics from Barrymore’s charity, there has been a 40 percent rise in commodity prices since the middle of last year, caused in part by skyrocketing energy costs and rising consumer demand in developing countries like India and China.  While the Rome-based agency has an annual budget of about $3 billion, but it said it needs $500 million more this year than it anticipated to help feed the world’s poor because of the rising food and energy prices.
