Filipino-made electronic
book to help students

The Department of Education and the Partners for Universal Literacy Foundation (PULL) signed a memorandum of understanding to make the Megumi Reader part of the learning apparatus in all the public elementary schools in the country.

The Megumi Reader is a Filipino-made electronic book, which aims to assist the non-readers among elementary pupils and promote literacy. It will also help improve the teaching-learning process in the classroom.

“The Megumi Reader is a breakthrough in our effort to integrate technology in enhancing the teaching-learning process. Its interactive features and versatility will help develop our pupils’ meta-cognitive skills—the ability to learn how to learn,” said Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus, adding that PULL has committed P3.5 million to fund the pilot phase of the project.

The electronic book is a low-cost, portable and simple-to-use device that can accommodate content for more than one learning area and can be used for multiple languages.

Designed for the safe use of children, the Megumi Reader is highly-interactive and has no moving parts.

“We look forward to the success of the project’s pilot phase so we can make this available to all public elementary schools nationwide,” the foundation said in a statement.

The Education department will provide the curricula for the development of educational software that will be loaded into the Megumi Reader. It will also monitor and evaluate the progress of the project.
