Three public-school teachers emerged top winners in the Fourth
Innovative Teachers Leadership Awards (ITLA) held recently.
Microsoft Philippines’ Partners in Learning,
in cooperation with the Department of Education, launched ITLA to
recognize teachers who use Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) as a tool in preparing their students for the future.
Michelle Casio, Academic Programs Manager of
Microsoft Philippines shares that the company “ collaborates with
government agencies like the Department of Education and other
educational institutions to improve student performance and build
the capacity of the Filipino to be a global competitor.”
At the awards ceremony, DepEd Assistant
Secretary for Programs and Project Dr. Teresita Inciong stressed
that “education holds a key role in the development and any
country. The Department of Education is convinced that ICT is now a
global standard.”
Ten public school teachers qualified vied for
the top awards. Each teacher submitted a digital portfolio
containing their profiles, learning materials, sample of their
students’ work, and abstracts of their projects.
Imelda Angelio of Ormoc City Central SPED
Center, Estelito B. Mendoza of Baguio City National High School,
Evelyn de la Cruz of San Isidro National High School, Emy Joy
Catamco and Lucille Dadang of Maria Cristina National High School,
Julius Gregory Hechanova and Alfonso Corpuz of Iligan City East High
School, Fedelyn Gomez of Tomas Cabili National High School,
Joveniana Hinay of South II, Central Elementary School, and Maria
Noemi Bagayaua made the cut to become the finalists.
Bagayaua, Gomez, and Hechanova bested the others
to emerge champions.
Bagayaua teaches English to Grade VI students.
She believes that her victory came unexpected because of the
comments she received from the judges. She also wants to share her
awards with her students, whom she learned to innovate for.
Gomez teaches Makabayan to high-school students.
Her entry taught her students the value of entrepreneurship, which
required her students to design an Animal Production Project
proposal. Gomez believes that her students are behind her success.
She also says that “[ITLA] inspires me more and continue my work
so that more students will be inspired as well.”
A rookie in teaching with only a year of
experience, Hechanova is a high school Mathematics teacher. He uses
PowerPoint presentations with animated illustrations to capture the
students’ attention. Despite the lack of computers in their
school, Hechanova managed to overcome this problem and required
students to explain their solutions to given problems using
PowerPoint presentations.
The three winners will be sent to Vietnam as
representatives for the annual Asian Regional Innovative Teachers
Conference in April.
