Ongoing until March 15 at The Metro Gallery is an interesting art exhibit billed as ‘Contrasts’ featuring abstract artists Jose Miguel Montinola and Van Tuico. The Manila Times was there during the launch.

“My paintings are all about the many contrasts going on in our lives. Oftentimes we know we have things to do but realize later that we weren’t able to because of time constraints and other reasons,” Tuico explains, adding, “My pieces are inspired by the many procrastinations I have experienced. It’s always been like that through the years and this show truly changed it.”

Having an innate heart for art, Tuico was introduced to art at a very early age but never thought of painting until 2006. His mentor, friend and renowned artist Rene Robles gave him his most valuable lessons and patiently mentors him until today on how to construct his compositions.

Chit Ramirez, also an artist, continuously reminds him that putting each color and stroke on the canvass needs justification and significance that gives the artwork essence.

Interesting pieces featured in the exhibit include the “In His Time series 1 & 2.” He shares that these paintings were made when he was going through an emotional battlefield. “The first piece conveys that I’m impatient and doing things at my own pace, in my own time. But the second painting connotes that God has His own perfect timing for everything that is best for me.”

On the other hand, Bacolod-based Jose Miguel Montinola is a self-taught artist. Contrasts is hisway of celebrating his 3rd year as a professional artist. He specializes in urban landscape and nudes. “Cityscapes, sunsets and horizons influence my painting, usually a release from the day-to-day chaos of the real world,” he intones.

“I have seen the pictures in the invitation and newspapers but I was really surprised when I came to the gallery because the pictures don’t do the paintings justice. The artworks are all amazing, textured and tactile. The paintings affected me. How the light shines in the paintings really captured everything that the artist wants to tell you.” RJ Sausa, an art enthusiast commented.

The Metro Gallery is located in P. Guevarra Street, San Juan Metro Manila. For more information, call 726-65-43.
