Boy Abunda on a roll

Sets his sights on possibly hosting program on Star TV

By Ricky T. Gallardo

The possibilities seem endless for hotshot television host Boy Abunda. Aside from his daily morning show with Kris Aquino, his in-depth one-on-one talk show on cable TV, and his weekend entertainment program, Abunda continues to spread his wings.

Recently, he took on yet another program, titled Inside the Cinema. Inspired by the James Lipton’s Inside the Actors’ Studio, this new undertaking will delve into the lives and lasting lessons of local celebrities in their work as actors.

“I admire Lipton, he is in a class all his own,” says Abunda, who clarifies right away that his show will not be an exact copy of the original. He and his team have finished four episodes and he is quick to say that he learned a lot about his subjects and their insights about the acting profession.

Chanda Romero, Pilita Corrales, Michael de Mesa and Joel Torre have all agreed to sit on the hot chair, not to be grilled by Abunda, but to share their priceless experiences as actors and celebrities.

“They opened up their hearts and allowed their emotions to flow naturally during the course of their respective interviews,” volunteers Abunda, adding, “They were not afraid to be vulnerable or strong, they were honest, they shared stories that most of the public, including me, have not heard of. That’s why the show is interesting.”

Romero for instance, revealed her rift with the late master director Lino Brocka. De Mesa was choked with emotions after recalling an episode in his young career when he felt truly violated, emotionally and physically, Torre narrated that he has stripped on film, removing one piece of clothing after another while in motion.

“We plan to get the likes of Caridad Sanchez, Ricky Lee, Anita Linda, and some others whose bodies of work embraced different eras. Hopefully, we can even get Marlene Dauden, Lolita Rodriguez, and some of the best directors, writers, and film people whose testimonies, I’m sure are priceless,” Abunda adds.

Abunda’s new baby

Without battling an eyelash, he admits that never in his wildest dreams did he ever think that he would one day have his own CD. But Abunda is a dreamer and he works hard to see his dreams come true.

Boy Abunda has a new CD and it’s called “Love Life. “ “It’s light conversations and leaning towards the inspirational, I get to converse with some of my dearest friends in the business—they talk about love and life and success and inspiration; and then we chose songs that move and inspire and affect the listeners. That’s the concept that kept us moving until the CD was finished and released.”

Abunda is referring to his heart to heart conversations with Ai Ai de las Alas, Kris Aquino, Ogie Alcasid. He also invited the likes of Aiza Seguerra, Erik Santos and Martin Nievera to share their gift of music.

But the most special thing that came out of this concept-driven CD is Abunda’s talk with his Nanay. A lot of listeners have admitted that they were so moved by this part of the CD and the connection between Abunda and his mom is truly inspiring.

It’s been a long, hard climb for Abunda since his days with Conchita Sunico at the Metropolitan Theater but he is now reaping the fruits of his hard work. Abunda lets us in on another development in his life: he is in the process of talking with a regional network Star TV that might have a talk show for him. “I’ve flown to Hong Kong a few times to discuss with them, and nothing is definite yet. But I am positive that something good will eventually come out of this. We can always dream big, right?”
