Filipino-American Ramiele Malubay, one of the 12
finalists of American Idol Season 7, has made it to the next round
of elimination.
The Filipina has survived her “boring”
performance on Wednesday when she sang “In My Life.” Judges
Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson said they thought the performance was
wooden. The two judges later used the harsher term “boring” to
describe Malubay’s performance.
Wearing a black tube dress with white belt, the
Filipina-American sang her chosen song with confidence, though on
the visibly nervous side. She got a standing ovation, but she also
failed to get the nod of the other more tactful judge—Paula Abdul,
who, probably to Malubay’s relief, did not use the “B” word.
All three judges had been thoroughly impressed with her performances
in the past rounds, the reason why she was still in the competition.
On Wednesday, Cowell said, “I was bored to
tears throughout the entire song. Forgettable. I expect a lot better
from you. You are better than that.”
Jackson: “It was pretty boring. It didn’t
move me.”
Abdul: “It was pretty safe. I think you’re
holding back.”
When host Ryan Seacrest asked the judges if
Malubay, now from Florida, would make it to the next round, they
said they weren’t sure if she could.
Wednesday’s series was inspired by the songs
of the Beatles, specifically compositions by John Lennon and Paul
McCartney. The three judges gave their thumbs-up to Chikezie Eze,
Carly Smithson, Brook White and David Cook.
Starting off the show on Wednesday was Syesha
Mercado with “Got to Get You into My Life,” followed by Eze with
“She’s a Woman.” Third singer to perform was Malubay, then
Jason Castro’s “If I Fell.”
Fifth performer of the night was Smithson with
“Come Together,” while Cook sang “Eleanor Rigby.” “Let It
Be” was White’s selected song followed by David Hernandez’s
“I Saw Her Standing There.”
“You Can’t Do That” was Amanda
Overmyer’s chosen song, while Michael Johns picked “Across the
Universe.” “Eight Days a Week” was Kristy Lee Cook’s choice,
and last performer David Archuleta sang “We Can Work It Out.”
The elimination night on Thursday saw Mercado,
Cook and Hernandez slipping to the bottom of the list. In the end,
Hernandez was eliminated.
