Teenage singer-actor Sam Concepcion was recently
chosen to be the official spokesperson for the Philippines by the
Business Software Alliance (BSA), a non-profit organization
promoting a safe and legal digital world to be its ‘B4USurf’
campaign. B4USurf is an Asia-wide campaign of the BSA which aims to
raise awareness on the risks and dangers of the Internet.
“I am honored to be chosen by
an international organization such as the BSA to be the spokesperson
for this campaign. I personally believe that this is a worthy cause
and that students should be educated on the dangers present when
they go online,” said Concepcion.
As access to the Internet
increases, BSA established a website, www.b4usurf.org, which
contains information on safe and responsible use of the Internet.
The website provides helpful tips to young Internet users on how to
protect themselves while online. The website also equips teachers
and parents with information to enable them to guide their students
and children while surfing the Internet.
“The Internet today is very
popular among the youth. We use it for researching, gaming and
social networking. However, for uninformed users, there are a lot of
elements in the Internet that may contain materials that are
unsafe,” Concepcion explained.
“Downloadable materials such as
software, music and movie clips are available through the Internet.
We should be aware that many of these materials are copyrighted
works and therefore, there are limitations regarding the utilization
of these materials,” Concepcion added.
The 15-year old singer and
theater actor is also the current Youth Ambassador for Education and
the Arts in the Third District of Manila and the Department of
Education’s Youth Role Model and Spokesperson since September
2007. Aside from these, Sam has played lead roles in several stage
productions including the Philippine version of High School Musical.
“We were impressed with Sam’s
achievement given his young age. He’s been influential to Filipino
students and we are confident that he will be an effective
spokesperson among his peers for B4USurf,” said Tarun Sawney,
BSA’s Director for Anti-Piracy in Asia.
