ENTHUSIASMS & FOREBODINGS
By Rene Q. Bas
Hail, comrade GMA!

SOME Gloria watchers are seeing a new vision. They see it because of her inexplicable actuations relative to the People’s Republic of China. These actuations apparently resulted from (a) an umbrella loan agreement worth billions with an instrumentality of the Chinese state, (b) the Senate investigation into the ZTE NBN deal scandal and (c) the discovery of the obviously unconstitutional—and possibly—treasonous Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking between a Philippine state corporation and a Chinese state corporation and later a Vietnamese state agency.

The vision seen is that of President Arroyo rising from the perceived moral squalor of the presidency into a strong and morally-driven leader.

Hua Mulan or Urduja

What these Gloria watchers told me they see is an image of her as a Hua Mulan (or, as Disney calls her, Fa Mulan). Or one of the Vietnamese Trung Sisters. Or our Princesa Urduja. (But Urduja may not be ours after all because the Pangasinense legend could actually be about an IndoChinese, specifically a Champan, amazon ruler. But who knows if the Chams really came from Pangasinan?)

Or a Lady of the Lake who in this case does not wait for a King Arthur to receive Excalibur from her hand but rises to full height as an Amazon or a Valkyrie in armor to rule over the Filipinos and turn them into a great nation and their unhappy land into a first-world state.

What they see is GMA who is a statesman. No longer someone preoccupied with survival till 2010 and beyond. No longer forced to tell—and having her people tell—discordant, incoherent and incredible explanations of outrageous things and events that, in Europe or the United States, normally lead to the resignation of prime ministers and presidents.

Moses-cum-Aaron

This new GMA the statesman will at last be the kind of Moses-cum-Aaron that some of us prayed for when she became president after Erap’s unlawful ouster.

An aside: Let it not be forgotten, however, that many who prayed for GMA to be the God-led deliverer of the Filipinos to the Promised Land had no other option once she became the new reality at Malacañang. They were against Erap’s removal by the GMA camp, the Makati-based civil-society and business groups, Archbishop Cardinal Sin, his auxiliary bishops and their allies, and the armed forces and national police commands.

More aside: And the Davide Supreme Court not only swore GMA in as the Republic’s new president at EDSA. Later, the Supremes also sealed Erap’s fate and confirmed GMA’s accession to the presidency by ruling that Erap’s departure from the Palace was his act of resignation. The Davide Court said it based its momentous ruling on a diary allegedly kept by Erap’s executive secretary Edgardo Angara.

End of aside: Many cannot help believing that the Angara diary is spurious. But the Inquirer gave it its stamp of hollowness. So the majority of the Filipino people came to accept the diary and the Supremes’ ruling as the Word of the Lord. That is how courts arrived at decisions against “enemies of the state and the Communist Party” in the defunct Soviet Union and China especially during the Maoist Cultural Revolution. Some claim that in the provinces courts in China still do.

Left foot of China

The new statesman GMA would transform our country into one with a disciplined citizenry led by her government that has the political will of a strong party—strong as the Communist Party of China.

Is that why Kampi, GMA’s very own party, is talking about “partnering” with the Chinese communists. And why it doesn’t matter if she entered into the necessary JMSU but violated the constitutional rule of informing and consulting Congress? And also why such deals as the ZTE NBN and others need not be discussed transparently with anybody?

The new Philippines will become a strong state, its mass poverty obliterated, its police and military modernized and equipped with Chinese-made equipment, its people marching to the beat of the GMA government’s drum thanks to massive loans and direct aid of the People’s Republic of China.

The Philippines could be the “left foot of China” (as it was once supposed to be the “right hand in Asia” of the USA). It will do for China what East Germany did for the Soviet Union—and more!

Is that okay with the venerable Washington Sycip, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Mayor Alfredo Lim and the taipans who have massive investments in China and are partners of China-based corporations in projects in various parts of the world?
