The Philippine National Police (PNP) has added 500 more cars and
motorcycles to its existing fleet of 8,000 land vehicles for preventive
patrol and police visibility operations.
PNP Chief Director General Avelino Razon, Jr.
presented the new police vehicles to Local Government Secretary
Ronaldo Puno during a ceremony in Camp Crame on Monday.
Razon said the new mobile assets were
acquired under the 2007 Procurement Program of the PNP. Of the 500
total mobile units, 100 are prowl cars, 255 are police utility
vehicles, and 145 are motorcycles. There were also three newly
refurbished V-150 armored tactical fighting vehicles.
“These vehicles will make PNP even more
effective in serving and protecting the people,” Razon said.
Also on PNP’s wishlist for this year are
three helicopters, 211 patrol cars, 526 utility vehicles, 295
motorcycles, 1,000 shotguns, 10,000 handguns, and special equipment
for anti-crime and internal security operations.
“The PNP leadership is pushing for more
resources because it will enable us to improve our mobility,
firepower, communication and investigation needed for our fight
against crime, insurgency and terrorism,” PNP Spokesman Senior
Supt. Nicanor Bartolome said.
Good tidings continued to pour in for the PNP as
Puno later announced Malacañang’s approval of the P10-billion
modernization program of the police force for logistics and
recruitment. This funding is an addition to the separate
P1.7-billion fund for housing and infrastructure development earlier
approved by President Gloria Arroyo for the police.
