CABANATUAN CITY: The people-friendly anti-crime campaign “Mamang
Pulis” of the Philippine National Police apparently failed to work
in Nueva Ecija as crimes, ranging from robbery to killing, has
seemingly piled up in the province the last few weeks.
While the police faced a blank wall on the
identities of the men behind the daytime ambush that killed three
people and seriously wounded one in Talavera, a 52 -year-old teacher
was gunned down in Barangay Narvacan, Nampicuan Monday afternoon
just as a cadaver was found riddled with bullets in Sta. Rosa town.
These are on top of the killing of a Japanese
national, Junichiro Itoh, in Barangay Macatbong on March 5 and a
robbery hold-up that occurred in the busy streets of Cabanatuan City
where a local businessman lost P500,000 also last week.
Police said that public school teacher Onofre
Buan, a resident of Barangay Cavite, Nampicuan was riding his single
motorcycle in Barangay Narvacan when he was fired at by two
unidentified suspects. Responding lawmen recovered three spent
shells from a cal .45 pistol, said reports.
Earlier, Cesar Fraile, 68; Jessica de la Cruz,
21 and Marie de la Cruz, 30, were killed when two men ambushed them
in Pinagpanaan, Talavera, Nueva Ecija. A certain Irene de Guzman was
seriously wounded while three other passengers of the Mitsubishi
Pajero they were riding managed to take cover and were unhurt.
Senior Supt. Napoleon Taas, acting provincial
police director, said upon his assumption that he was bringing to
Nueva Ecija the “Mamang Pulis” campaign, the icon representing
community-friendly but effective law enforcers.
Taas was given this provincial assignment to
maintain peace and order following the killing of the Sangguniang
Bayan secretary of San Antonio town among others.
