ATHENS: Greek garbage collectors and workers with the country’s main power company returned to work Friday after a two-week strike, while lawyers, bank employees and teachers continue their protest against a controversial government pension bill. WASHINGTON: Tensions between Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton rose again Saturday after the rival campaigns exchanged harsh words as Obama gained the backing of the country’s only Hispanic governor. Rival Hillary Clinton’s campaign dismissed the nod from New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson as coming too late to have any effect, while Obama’s staff hit out at Clinton’s alleged dishonesty after records detailing her years as first lady were made public.

TAIPEI: Taiwanese voters thronged polling stations Saturday to vote for a new president amid concern over the stuttering economy and hopes he will repair relations with big neighbor China. Beijing and Washington are closely watching the vote for signs of a new approach in the flashpoint region after eight years of recurring tensions under outgoing President Chen Shui-bian.

ISLAMABAD: Slain Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto’s party was due to announce the name of its candidate for prime minister Saturday, with every indication he may be elected uncontested. The new parliament is to meet on Monday to elect the prime minister, who is to be sworn in by President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday, presidential spokesman Rashid Qureshi said.
