Microsoft to unveil its new line-up of enterprise solutions platforms

Microsoft Philippines is set to launch its new flagship server and application development products with added and enhanced security features on April 10 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City.

In a recent Microsoft Wave Media Bootcamp held in Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Olongapo City, Microsoft gave the media a preview of its latest portfolio of applications, Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008.

Nicky Eala, business group director for server and tools, Microsoft Philippines, said the new line-up of products have built-in enhanced capabilities designed to address the needs of enterprises and developers.

“Nowadays, people spend 80 percent of their IT budget on maintenance and 20 percent of that on developing new innovations or new businesses and that is what we want to change,” Eala said.

Among other challenges are securing assets, managing systems, reducing costs, increasing productivity of people and developing new applications, according to Eala.

The next-generation platforms

To address these concerns, Microsoft has focused on the four areas of IT, namely; security, virtualization, Web productivity and business intelligence with the release of the three products.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008, the next-generation Windows Server operating system, has a virtualization capability. This feature is Microsoft’s new hypervisor-based virtualization technology: a thin software layer between the hardware and Windows Server 2008 operating system. Thus, it allows multiple operating systems to run, unmodified, on a host computer at the same time, according to Microsoft.

Among other new technology to the latest flagship server operating system are the NAP or Network Access Protection, which provides a new framework that allows IT administrators to establish health requirements for the network; Windows PowerShell, new command-line shell and scripting language designed to increase IT professionals’ productivity; Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, provides security and extensible platform for efficiently managing and reliably hosting Web applications and services.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 will provide a trusted, productive, and an end-to-end business intelligence platform that helps the user to run his most mission-critical applications.

According to Liezel Milan, Microsoft Application Platform product manager, SQL Server 2008 is more than a database for it delivers new services, such as reporting, analysis and integration.

On the other hand, Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 enables developers to rapidly create connected applications that deliver the highest quality and rich user experiences. Visual designers for faster development with the .NET Framework 3.5, substantial improvements to Web development tools and language enhancements are some of the enhancements done on the product. According to Microsoft, with Visual Studio 2008, organizations will be having a smooth experience to capture and analyze information to help them make effective business decisions.
