THE Social Security System (SSS) has collected a
total of P11.62 billion in contributions from Visayas and Mindanao
last year, which was 17 percent more than the P9.94 billion
collected in 2006, a top official said.
SSS President and Chief Executive
Officer Corazon de la Paz-Bernardo said payments from the two areas
made up 19 percent of the P62-billion total contribution collection
last year.
“Over-the-counter payments at
SSS branches and accredited banks in Visayas and Mindanao grew last
year,” de la Paz-Bernardo said. “We further increased collection
by intensifying efforts against delinquent employers.”
The SSS has over 8 million
members in Visayas and Mindanao, 2.23 million of which are
self-employed, including 281,428 farmers and fishermen. Collection
results were disclosed during the performance review conference held
in Iloilo City last month.
The state-run institution has
collected P724.33 million in overdue contributions from 41,193
delinquent employers in Visayas and Mindanao last year, which was 19
percent more than the P607.01 million paid in 2006.
Payments through SSS-accredited
banks rose to P5.59 billion from P5.10 billion in the previous year.
“Opening teller facilities in
12 branches in Visayas and Mindanao during the last quarter of 2007
helped boost collection by SSS offices,” de la Paz-Bernardo said.
The SSS opened teller facilities
in its offices in Catbalogan (Samar), Bais (Negros Oriental), Kalibo
(Aklan), Ormoc (Leyte), Maasin (Southern Leyte), Bislig (Surigao del
Sur), Digos (Davao del Sur), Ipil (Zamboanga del Sur), Kidapawan
(North Cotabato), Koronadal (South Cotabato), Tacurong (Sultan
Kudarat), and Gingoog (Misamis Oriental) last year, adding to its 17
branches in Visayas and Mindanao which accept SSS payments.
