Nowitzki hurt in Mavs loss to Spurs

DALLAS, Texas: Argentina’s Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and the San Antonio Spurs defeated Dallas 88-81 here Sunday in a game where Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki went down with a serious left leg injury.

Tim Duncan added 19 points and 13 rebounds while French playmaker Tony Parker scored 13 for the Spurs, who rose to 47-23 to match the Houston Rockets for fifth place in the National Basketball Association’s Western Conference.

“This is a huge win,” Ginobili said. “We had opportunities [to win that] we let go, Philadelphia on the road and Boston at home. This was a huge one to get back.”

Worse than the defeat for Dallas, which slid to 44-26 with a third home defeat in a row, was the injury to Nowitzki, who landed awkwardly after blocking a shot by Ime Udoka with 3:18 to play in the third quarter.

The German star, who leads the Mavericks with 23.7 points a game, fell to the court grabbing his left ankle in pain and was helped off the court without putting pressure on his left leg. He was seen limping as he tried to walk.
