THE military has assured tourists planning to visit Palawan that the
region is safe and they don’t need to worry about the presence of
terrorist groups in the area.
This guarantee came from Commodore Roperto Borromeo,
chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command (AFP-Wescom)
based in Puerto Princessa, Palawan.
Borromeo said the military has not monitored any
threat while authorities continue coordination and monitoring.
“Palawan remains safe, secure and
progressive,” said Borromeo in a speech during the 32nd
anniversary of Wescom, which AFP chief Hermogenes Esperon
attended.
It is in Palawan where the Abu Sayyaf Group
abducted 20 local and foreign tourists including US missionary
couple Matin and Gracia Burnham in Dos Palmas Resort in Puerto
Princessa City Palawan on May 27, 2001.
Borromeo said the successful military and police
operation prevented the planned attack of the Abu Sayyaf Group in
the region, particularly the arrest of seven of its members last
year.
Esperon attributed the successful antiterrorism
operation to the cooperation between military and police forces
detailed in Palawan, which has prevented the operation of the
terrorist group with links to al-Qaeda.
