Kristina Bernadette “Kris”
Aquino-Yap never officially announced that she was pregnant,
although she reportedly confirmed it to her production staff during
the taping of her game show Wheel of Fortune before Holy Week.
On Tuesday morning, however, she
sent a text message to entertainment columnist and television talk
show host Cristy Fermin that she had lost her baby.
The message to Fermin read: “I
had a miscarriage. Collapsed gestational sac and blighted ovum. We
just have to wait for my body to expel it on its own—seven a half
weeks. God’s will so I can take care of my mom. Just came from Dr.
Pastorfide with my mom now. On our way home from the hospital.”
This sad piece of news came a day
after Kris and her senator-brother Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd
announced that their mother, former President Corazon “Cory”
Aquino is stricken with colon cancer.
Kris’ good friend and
confidante, ABS-CBN’s Biboy Arboleda, sent us a text message hours
after the news broke out on Mrs. Aquino’s illness. The message
read: “Hi Ricky, official statement of Krissy: Seven and a half
weeks of pregnancy ended in miscarriage because my gestational sac
has collapsed and the ovum is blighted. I feel this is God’s way
to ensure that I can take care of my mom.”
A blighted ovum, a very common
type of miscarriage, occurs in the early weeks of pregnancy.
Sometimes referred to as embryonic pregnancy, this condition occurs
when a fertilized egg that contains no embryo attaches itself
successfully to the wall of the uterus. Instead, all that forms is a
placenta and membrane.
Most cases of blighted ovum will
be miscarried naturally by the body, but sometimes, the tissues
inside the uterus need to be removed by a health-care professional.
This condition is actually fairly
common in pregnancy. “In fact, they account for at least 60
percent of all first-trimester miscarriages. However, because they
occur so early on, some women are not even aware of the fact that
they are pregnant when they suffer from a blighted ovum,” said Dr.
Edu Borja of the Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
Kris has shared with some of her
trusted friends that she didn’t experience the usual signs of her
first two pregnancies.
“She told me that she didn’t
have skin rashes, and she didn’t get irritated with the scent of
perfumes, which she’s very sensitive to. That’s why she was even
doubting if she was indeed pregnant,” Arboleda said.
He also shared that Kris had been
having her regular checkup and evaluation sessions with her
obstetrician for the past three weeks, and gave up a planned family
vacation either in Bangkok or Hong Kong for Easter due to her
condition and her mother’s current health situation.
Symptoms of a blighted pregnancy
can be mild or even non-existent. Women who do receive a positive
pregnancy test will likely experience some of the common pregnancy
symptoms, such as fatigue and nausea, that Kris didn’t really
remember having.
In Kris’ case, some medical
experts would encourage their patients to wait for their bodies to
expel the blighted ovum naturally. Though this option does prevent
Kris from having to undergo invasive-treatment procedures, it can
also be very emotional and painful to wait for a natural
miscarriage. For this reason, some women who are in this situation
would opt to have a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure to
remove the tissues formed inside the uterus.
Kris’s friends are saddened.
Dawn Zulueta, one of her good
friends, said she talked to Kris on Monday “about her making the
announcement regarding Tita Cory” and felt sorry that Kris lost
her baby. (Mrs. Aquino is fondly called Tita, or Aunt, by many
Filipinos.)
“God has His plans, [and] I am
praying for Kris,” Dawn added.
