THE growing number of high school graduates has
prompted the Manila City government to increase the amount of
financial assistance to city-funded tertiary schools Pamantasan ng
Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) and City College of Manila (CCM) by P50
million.
In his speech during the
commencement exercises of the Manuel L. Quezon High School, Mayor
Alfredo Lim of Manila said PLM and CCM deserves such additional
budget because this would equip the schools for the rising number of
public high school graduates opting to pursue college education in
the city-run institutions.
Lim also reminded the graduates
to do well in school so that they could maximize the opportunity of
having free quality education.
“With loving parents beside you
to support you, it is your duty to repay them by studying very
hard,” he said. “Your gratitude will be well expressed if you
become successful in your respective careers,” Lim said.
Top Manila women awarded
A women’s volunteer group and
the Manila City government on Wednesday awarded the ten outstanding
women leaders in the city in observance of the Women’s Month at
City Hall.
Mayor Lim and Soroptimist
International of Sampaloc President Violeta Lapid feted Ana Maria
Bacudio and Dr. Cristina Yuson for education; Josefina Chua and Bae
Norhaina Lucman for health and sanitation; Zenaida de Castro and
Remedios Eraña for humanitarian service; Shirley Bondoc and Pablita
Lagasca for livelihood; and policewomen Teresita Lim and Medina
Olego for peace and order.
“Years ago, women were
considered inferior in our society, but all that has changed now,”
Lim said. “The Filipino women have worked their way up.”
Lim cited the Philippines’
ranking in the recent Global Gender Gap Reduction Index compiled by
the Swiss-based World Economic Forum, where the country ranked
sixth.
“We should respect women
because without them, men are nothing. They [women] serve as our
inspiration,” he said.
