FRANCIS CASEY ALCANTARA of the Philippines stormed
into the third round of the 19th Mitsubishi Lancer International
Juniors Tennis Championships after posting a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory
over Maciej Rajski of Poland on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial
Tennis Center hardcourt.
The 12th-seeded Alcantara, a
former Asian 14-under champion, banked on his solid forehand to
overcome the world’s No. 290 Rajski and arrange a meeting with
eighth-seeded Matthew James of Great Britain, a 6-0, 6-3 winner over
American qualifier Michael Lampa.
Top seed Andrew Thomas of
Australia, second seed Borut Puc of Slovenia, third pick Mark
Verryth of Australia, fourth seed Soong Jae Cho of South Korea and
fifth seed Kittipong Wachiramanowong scored easy victories to
advance in the next round of this Group 1 event sanctioned by the
International Tennis Federation.
Thomas, ranked No. 15 in the ITF
Juniors, defeated unseeded Ben McLachlan of New Zealand, 6-3, 6-3,
to arrange a third-round showdown with unseeded James Duckworth of
Australia, who eliminated No. 14 Yuki Matsuo of Japan, 6-2, 6-3.
The world’s No. 28 Puc
outplayed Dino Dellorto of Hong Kong, 6-4, 6-3, to advance against
unseeded Stephen Hoh of Australia, who ousted No. 13 Karunuday Singh
of India, 6-3, 6-2.
Verryth, downed Riki McLachlan of
New Zealand, 6-3, 6-4, to forge a third-round clash against No. 16
Sudanwa Sitaram of India, who conquered qualifier Justin Chak-To of
Hong Kong, 6-3, 6-1.
Cho clobbered Abdullah Al Haji of
Qatar, 6-0, 6-1, to advance against unseeded Dane Proppogia of
Australia, who stunned No. 15 Akash Wagh of India, 7-5, 6-2.
Wachiramanowong got rid of
unseeded Pablo Olivarez Jr. of the Philippines, 6-2, 6-2, to advance
against unseeded Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan, who defeated No. 10
Logan Mackenzie of New Zealand, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
