St. Benilde, Perpetual gain semifinal slots

FORMER champion College of Saint Benilde and unheralded University of Perpetual Help Dalta posted their third straight wins on Wednesday to secure the first two semis slots in the 2008 Nestea Beach Volley National Circuits Luzon Elimination at the Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park in Cavite.

CSB pair Angelo Espiritu and Eddie Macdon displayed superb net defense in the extra set to upset last year’s runner up Far Eastern University represented by Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol via a 21-17, 15-21, 15-13 decision.

“Our defense was a big factor. We’ve just concentrated on how to stop their attacks and at the same time our good reception really helped us to set up good plays. We are determined to reclaim our glory days after failing to advance in the national finals last year,” said the 22-year-old Espiritu, a graduating culinary arts student.

CSB earlier defeated University of Santo Tomas, 13-21, 21-8, 15-9, and Adamson University, 13-21, 21-17, 15-8.

On the other hand, Perpetual’s Aristian Sartin and Marcelo Joaquin Jr. continued to make an impact following their 21-18, 23-21 beating of Philippine Christian University’s Jhester Tuante and Gabriel Usman.

Perpetual also trounced De La Salle-Dasmariñas, 13-21, 23-21, 15-7, and Saint Francis of Assisi College, 21-14, 21-23, 16-14.

FEU and PCU will be relegated in the loser’s bracket along with St. Francis and Adamson.

St. Francis survived PATTS College of Aeronautics, 15-21, 21-14, 15-5 while Adamson eliminated San Beda College, 21-13, 25-23, to stay in hunt for the remaining semis berths.
