Fast, light and exciting to ride, BMW Motorrad’s F 800 is
scheduled to have its own race series that will soon begin in South
Africa. Called the F 800 Cup, BMW’s series will be integrated
within the Battle of the Twins (BOTTS), a popular racing class that
can be found in most national championships around the world.
With large grids, exotic machinery and the
booming sounds of big twin engines, BOTTS has become one of the most
successful race classes in recent years. The BOTTS championship
comprises two classes: Supersports Twins, which covers the
larger-capacity superbikes; and Sports Twins, which takes in
smaller-capacity machines specially those under 800cc.
Riders in the F 800 Cup will not only compete in
the Sports Twins category against all other makes, but also within
their own F 800 class. The championship starts next month and about
40 F 800 riders are expected at each round.
Although launched only in 2006, the cleverly
designed and engineered F 800 sports middleweight machines have
become a favorite to a lot of riders, many of whom are new to the
BMW brand. With its low-maintenance belt drive, high-torque engine,
relaxed ergonomics and superb control, many motorcyclists—from
sport riders and long-distance tourers, to freestyle world champion
Chris Pfeiffer—have chosen the F 800 as their machine.
The F 800 is a user-friendly sports bike that is
capable of racing against much more focused machines—at half the
cost.
