A Filipino overseas worker was killed after he was
hit by debris from an explosion caused by a fire from a fireworks
warehouse in Dubai on Wednesday.
Department of Foreign Affairs
spokesperson Claro Cristobal said Philippine Consul General in Dubai
Benito Valeriano reported that Romeo Olaya was killed from the
explosion at the Seville Products Factory in Dubai at 6 a.m. on
March 26.
Olaya, who was employed by
Seville, was reportedly about to begin his work shift when the
explosion took place. He was walking near the blast site to his
place of work when he was hit by debris from the explosion.
He was rushed to the Rashid
Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. According to Consul
General Valeriano, the authorities are currently investigating the
blast.
Seville already informed the
victim’s family and expressed their regret for what happened. The
Philippine Consul General in Dubai is in coordination with Seville
for the repatriation of Olaya’s remains, and the claiming of his
benefits.
Footage aired by Al-Arabiya
television showed the explosion caused flames to shoot 100 meters
into the sky, followed by a massive eruption of smoke and ashes. Two
other people were injured.
The industrial zone is home to
hundreds of factories and warehouses in the booming emirate.
